Tube Preamplifiers

Welcome to SAS Audio Labs. Listening to music should be a soulful, believeble, life like, and fun experience. The 10A, 11A tube preamplifiers are the best in the world at this. And the 25ppt tube amplifier is also truly world class. What makes them so good?

  1. I spent thousands of hours developing new testing methods (three stringent methods allow me to check for errors and descrepencies). Then I perform tests, determining the most accurate sounding parts to incorporate. One would be amazed how far off some highly touted parts are. Some capacitors are custom manufactured to my specs.

  2. I am not shackled by preconceived ideas. It is amazing how often the 'gospel' was simply one man's, or group's, opinoin that gained a following. Many times, these individuals have never tested their claims for accuracy, or even know how to. When examined through sophicated listening tests, many times the results were negative.

There are concepts that are gleaned from 50+ year old books, such as the RCA Radiotron Designers Handbook, which are simply discarded. I.e. Frequency dependent feedback from stage to stage through the power supply. (See my White Papers.) Virtually every manufacturer disegards the problem by using only one B+ supply. If they say it is not a problem, or they solved it, they have either not done their homework or they simply disregarded the problem. Integrated amplifiers with high sensitivity are the worst offenders.

  3. I believe that fewer, properly designed stages is good. Fewer stages means less distortion, whether harmonic, intermodulatiion, soundstage, dynamic, tonal etc. Why the excess gain when it is not needed, and raises the noise floor.

  4. I compare my tube preamplifiers to basically "nothing" (three different ways, making sure there are no errors) in my special test system. 'Nothing' means the music sounds the same if the preamplifier is in line as out of line. The preamplifier, interconnect cables (ics), and cables are the only components these tests can be performed on. These components will form a solid foundation one can rely on for choosing the rest of the system.

Simply "voicing" (as many claim) a tube or tube preamplifier means the results are system dependent. The preamplifier presents no foundation one can rely on for being accurate. So describing the actual sound is just a guess.

  5. All my tube preamplifiers can easily drive amplifiers down to 20k ohm input impedances, without the need of an additional buffer stage, which degrades the music.

Both my tube preamplifiers have been compared to over 30 different brand preamps, and won (including 6sn7, 6H30, and 5687 based preamplifiers).

Here are some excerpt from those who have either purchased or auditioned the B10A/10A tube preamplifiers (See my review pages for more comments).

Bound for Sound, Issue #163 SAS Audio 10A tube Preamplifier is one of only 3 listed in "Exceptional Merit" catagory.
"I expecially feel that way about the SAS (Audio Labs) 10A, a tube unit of moderate expense that simply stomps a mud hole in just about every active unit made - regardless of price."

Rich Weiner: "The SAS 10A is the most musically truthful preamp I'm aware of, and I will expand that statement by listing some of the line stages I've had in my otherwise very stable system: Herron VTSP-1, VAC CPA III, VAC Standard LE, Audio Research 3A, ARC 8, ARC 10, Mark Levinson ML-1, Levinson ML-7, Levinson ML-10A, Original Aronov PS-100 and Musical Concepts modification, Nagra PL-P, Beveridge RM-1, Rappaport, Placette Passive - there are more, but you get the point. Until I got the 10A, I struggled to make the other components live up to their potential."

Jon L. "THE strength of this preamp IMO is its sheer ability to communicate music in a way that makes you not even care about how it's doing it...."

Brad M. "PRAT. wow the pace and rhythm... were incredible. It's what make music music! Needless to say I will be keeping the 10a! "

Vauhn M. "Thanks for engineering such an outstanding product."

Very important is reliability. Since starting my company nearly 11 years ago, my tube preamplifiers have a spotless record. That is reliability. No blowups taking amps or speakers.

    25PPT Tube Amplifier

My 25PPT vacuum tube amplifier also incorporates unique features:

    1. Only the best quality parts and transformers are used. Our output transformers allow the frequency response to soar past 75 khz, -3db; thus keeping the integrity of the high frequencies intact.

    2. The 25ppt is a 2 stage separate power supply design. Integrateds, with the active preamp stage built in and 3 or more total stages, have problems with frequency dependent feedback through the power supply. This causes sonic problems that individual power supplies minimize/eliminate. See Interstage Sonic Feedback Thru the Power Supply

As one can see from the article, preserving the integrity of the signal is very difficult. At this time, the 25ppt is not being sold for both shipping concerns and now upgrade purposes. Hopefully, it will become available fairly soon.
